Electricity, Gas and Water

Electricity

Visitors to the UK should note that the electricity supply is 230 volts A.C. at 50 Hz.

Suppliers

Traditionally, Aberystwyth has been served mainly by Scottish Power Manweb. However, consumers can now buy their electricity from any company they wish. Changing suppliers is quite easy and does not need any work to be carried out at the property.

Faults and Supply Enquiries

No matter who you buy your electricity from, it is distributed by SP Power Systems, a division of Scottish Power. Power cuts or damage to supply lines should be reported to their service centre on 0845 272 2424.

Moving Home

When you move into a new property you will normally have to use the existing energy supplier at first (i.e. the one chosen by the previous occupier). After the supply has been transferred into your name, you can then apply to switch suppliers if you wish to do so. If you don't know who the current supplier is, you can find out by calling SP Power Systems on 0845 270 9101.

Gas

Piped mains gas is available in the majority of the town, but not in most surrounding villages.

Suppliers

Domestic consumers can now buy their gas from any company they wish. Changing suppliers is quite easy and does not need any work to be carried out at the property. British Gas is probably still Aberystwyth's dominant supplier.

Supply Enquiries and Gas Leaks

No matter who you buy your gas from, it is probably piped into your house by Wales & West Utilities. Gas leaks should always be reported directly to the National Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111999.

All mains water and sewarage in the Aberystwyth area is provided by Welsh Water - a not-for-profit company that covers much of Wales.
