Promenade and Beaches
Stretching for a mile and a half from the harbour and marina in the south to Constitution Hill in the north, the promenade is the focal point of the town.
During the day, and on fine summer evenings, the Promenade is where you'll find people enjoying a leisurely walk and 'kicking the bar' at the northern end. It's also home to determined joggers, skaters and roller-bladers!
At its southern end, the promenade ajoins the small harbour and marina. Moving north, the stretch known as 'New Promenade' continues, winding tightly around the edge of the castle grounds towards St Michael's Church and the Old College.
A seafront landmark, the Old College was originally built as a hotel in the 1870s; when this venture failed, founders of the recently-established University took the opportunity to secure a permanent base for the institution. Although Aberystwyth's university is now mainly based on the hillside Penglais campus, this ornate, Gothic-style building still houses a small selection of teaching and administrative departments of the University.
Just slightly further on is the short remaining section of Aberystwyth Pier. Constructed in 1864, this soon became a popular attraction. Once reaching 900 feet out in to the sea, but now only 300 feet long, the pier houses a pub, nightclub, ice-cream parlour, amusement arcade, snooker club and brasserie.

The wide main promenade has been refurbished in recent years, and includes a children's paddling pool and the Bandstand. During the summer season, the Bandstand becomes a venue for several events with appearances from local bands, performers and choirs.
The north beach is mainly shingle and dark sand and the sea is clean, if sometimes rather cold.
